OnePlus Nord 5G Full Review

Introduction

OnePlus Nord

With the OnePlus Nord 5G, OnePlus is returning to its fundamentals: offering a smartphone at a low price, without making any concessions on the components or design of the device. We were able to take control of the smartphone for a short time and here give you our first impressions.
That's it, we received it in the editorial staff! While the OnePlus North has only just been announced, the smartphone has already reached us, after long months of rumors, rumors which have been partially confirmed in recent weeks by its manufacturer. First of all, it should be noted that this is by no means a matter of performing a complete test of the device. We haven't had the phone long enough for this, and OnePlus doesn't want us to publish a review of its smartphone at the moment (those more used to it will understand: the test is currently under embargo).

However, we can give you our first impressions and our first pictures of the OnePlus North, which is already shaping up to be one of the best smartphones of the year in terms of quality / price.

A very nice design for a mid-range

It's hard to be super demanding with a smartphone at this price (we will come back to the price range of the device), but OnePlus has made great efforts not to neglect this aspect of the smartphone. The manufacturer does everything to make his smartphone comfortable to use, and that’s the impression he gives from the first few minutes. With its curves, its ultimately compact size and its measured weight (it weighs 184 grams on the scale), the OnePlus Nord should be placed in the category of smartphones which benefit from a worked design, without revolutionizing the genre.

OnePlus Nord

On its sides, the device has a volume control button located on the left side, and another power button located on the right side of the smartphone. There is also the traditional OnePlus lock button, placed just above the power button.

The back of the device is also very pleasant: OnePlus gave us the blue model (called blue marble, more exactly), which turns out to be rather pretty. It’s impossible to avoid fingerprints, but they are ultimately less visible than on an all-black model wearing a mirror effect. The smartphone benefits from a quad rear photo sensor that makes it slightly wobbly when laid flat, but ultimately it's just a small detail that you quickly forget. Finally, we notice the absence of a fingerprint sensor on the rear, but a sensor located under the screen ... What more could you ask for in a mid-range?

Enjoying a refresh rate of 90 Hz and a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, its 6.44 ″ screen boasts a 20: 9 aspect ratio. In theory, what to play, consult the web, watch films and series in very good conditions. Remember that this is not the first time that the Chinese manufacturer has come to the 90 Hz field, since the manufacturer had already offered this same technology to its OnePlus 7 Pro. But the device was clearly top of the line, which the OnePlus Nord isn't (though ...?).

Available in two colors, blue or dark gray (mirror effect), we just regret that OnePlus does not offer more choice and that nothing is planned in this direction. But who knows? If the device is successful, maybe OnePlus will decide to offer more colors.

OnePlus Nord

A Powerful processor

Taking advantage of a Snapdragon 765G, 8 or 12 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of storage space depending on the configuration chosen, the OnePlus Nord 5G is a smartphone that really has it all. Of course, the manufacturer could also have offered an even more powerful SoC, based on Snapdragon 855 or 865 for example, but this will have been at the expense of the price. Because the OnePlus Nord 5G differs from the competition by its super attractive (and aggressive) price: at 399 € for the model equipped with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, it is undoubtedly one some of the best deals out there for a 5G device, if not the best.

A smartphone with a solid photo offer

Especially since OnePlus has not been stingy with the rest and has not contented itself with delivering a device that simply has a processor. Up front, there's a dual photo sensor located in the upper top corner of the screen. Two small punches therefore "embellish" the display surface, but they are ultimately discreet enough to be quickly forgotten. In terms of performance, we have a 32 Mpx sensor (Sony IMX 616 f / 2.45) and another of 8 Mpx (ultra wide angle 105 ° f / 2.45). OnePlus claims to have worked on the front distortion of the camera, so that the pictures are as distorted as possible.

Same thing at the back: OnePlus did not skimp on the hardware components, since we find the smartphone has a 48 Mpx sensor (main sensor), another 8 Mpx (ultra-wide-angle) + 2 MP (macro) + 5 Mpx (the 4th sensor is mainly dedicated to depth of field, but it is not a ToF module as we find more and more on mid and high-end smartphones. range).

OnePlus Nord

On the operating system side, we find the winning duo of Android 10 and OxygenOS 10 (delivered here in version 10.5). Those accustomed to the brand's devices will find all their habits, while others will appreciate an undistorted version of Android, close to what we find on Android Stock, but packed with small options that allow you to customize your environment according to of its uses.

In the end, our first impressions of this new smartphone are rather positive, although we will have to wait for a full test to get a full idea of its performance, especially in terms of photography. The design, the technical sheet, the photo part are all assets that should allow the OnePlus North to make its way on the podium of the best mid-range smartphones, and has something to worry about the high-end if we temporarily puts aside its SoC.
