Fans of Huawei and its smartphone brand Honor have to cope with a hard blow just like the company itself: The Google Play Store has been deleted and so new phones with Android operating system come, but without Google services. Some newcomers from Huawei and Honor are cheap to buy despite the strong hardware - such as the Honor 9A. COMPUTER BILD clarifies what equipment the device has.

Features and Performance

The Honor 9A scores with two strengths: a large battery and a flat design. The battery comes with 5,000 mAh. According to the manufacturer, the smartphone can withstand 33 hours of continuous telephony in the LTE network or 35 hours of video playback without charging. Despite the thick battery, the metal housing is light (weight: 185 grams) and flat (thickness: 9.04 millimeters). The LC display has a diagonal of 6.3 inches and a resolution of 1,600x720 pixels (278 ppi). At the front is a selfie camera with a resolution of 8 megapixels (MP). The main camera consists of three lenses, which are built flat into the housing: a main lens with 13 MP, another for shooting with depth of field for portraits (2 MP) and a lens for wide-angle shooting (5 MP, field of view: 120 degrees). The storage is 64 gigabytes (GB) - which is decent considering the price range. With a microSD card, it can be expanded by 512 GB. There is also space for a second SIM card. The processor works with at least 3 GB RAM. The phone offers a micro-USB port for charging and a 3.5 millimeter jack for headphones.

Android 10 with Huawei AppGallery

Android 10 is the operating system - but due to the trade dispute between China and the USA there is no access to the Google Play Store, Google services or apps. Instead, the smartphone has the "Huawei AppGallery" on board - a young system that has so far offered few apps. Huawei's own voice assistant ("Huawei Assistant") is also on board. After all, with a little fiddling, some apps can be installed via detours, as the COMPUTER BILD test of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro showed - but users make compromises and need patience. For example, there is no "Google Maps" from the start, but "Here" navigation. If you want to install the Messenger WhatsApp or the photo service Instagram, for example, you have to take detours and use the Amazon app store, the websites of the app developers or the APK files.

Price and availability

The sale of the Honor 9A starts on July 1st, 2020. It comes in three colors: black ("Midnight Black"), blue ("Phantom Blue") and a kind of mother-of-pearl ("Ice Green"). The manufacturer's recommended retail price (RRP) is EUR 149.90. At the start, the mobile phone is already discounted at Medie Markt and Saturn: From July 1 to 15, 2020, it will cost 129.90 euros each.
